Marindrano is an integrated water resources management (IWRM) project in the highlands of Amoron’i Mania and Haute Matsiatra. It will be conducted between April 2023 and March 2025 in partnership with NGO Agrisud International.
The Rhyviere project for hydroelectric village networks, energy and environmental respect, conducted in two phases (phase I: 2008-2014, phase II: 2014-2022), was designed for rural electrification using hydroelectricity. Conducted by GRET in the Vatovavy Fitovinany and Haute Matsiatra regions, this project included an essential environmental dimension from the outset. The objective was to protect watersheds upstream of installations and ensure fair, sustainable management of water downstream of hydroelectric dams.
The watershed development plan for Fanindrona, in the Haute Matsiatra region, was put in place to ensure continuity of the Rhyviere project’s actions. This plan includes a funding mechanism based on payments for ecosystem services (PES) and is coordinated by the watershed stakeholders’ platform (RAISAHA). An agreement was reached on sharing of water between electricity production and other uses, such as drinking water supply, sanitation and agriculture.
However, these explorations and their monitoring are no longer included in the timeframe of the Rhyviere project. Consequently, the Marindrano project aims to ensure the operationalisation of local IWRM and PES, and to continue reflections at regional and national level.
