Improving water and sanitation services in Mandalay City (Myanmar)
Field Project
Myanmar

The project aims to provide access to water for 2,000 households in Mandalay City (Amarapura Township) and to implement incentives for households to connect to the networks. It also focuses on reinforcing the capacities of the municipality in terms of technical, commercial and financial management through close collaboration with its dedicated departments and the development of appropriate management tools. The installation of measuring instruments on the water networks will enable improvement of technical management of the system and the creation of a substantial database to prepare future projects. Lastly, by drawing up terms of reference for the construction of a water treatment plant, the set-up of a performance-based management contract and the implementation of an awareness-raising campaign on better water use, sanitation and hygiene practices, the project will prepare the implementation of a large-scale programme funded by AFD. The project is being implemented in partnership with Suez Consulting.

GRET is in charge of:

  • Coordinating and piloting the project
  • Technical studies and definition of solutions for extension of the water networks
  • Technical assistance to Mandalay City District Council for public contracting procedures
  • Supervision of works related to extension of the water networks
  • Socio-economic surveys and studies on water and sanitation services
  • Implementation of a communication and awareness-raising strategy for households
  • Development of management tools, training and support to the water service provider
