In Congo, GRET has been working for almost a decade on sanitation issues through several projects (Filipa, Jagov, Novai, etc.). These actions made it possible to highlight the employment potential of the waste pre-collection operator trade to young people and to structure the trade.
From 2020 to 2022, in collaboration with the relevant authorities, a certified training system was implemented in Brazzaville during phase 1 of the Jagov project (budget of 149 985 €), as part of the JADE programme agreement (Young people as stakeholders in the future). This training was tested on 10 young people, including 4 women, who subsequently entered the trade.

While the first phase made it possible to test training and awareness-raising, the second phase is more ambitious: three times more young people will be trained and awareness-raising will be extended to nine districts in Brazzaville (compared to four previously).
For this second phase (2024-2026), the training system will innovate by favouring the human dimension, boosting young people’s intra- and interpersonal skills in order to make them actors of their own integration.
Since 2020, GRET and its partners have been exploring new ways to support young people through the JADE programme. This initiative aims to promote an overall approach to integration, including economic, professional, social, civic, environmental and climate aspects. The idea is to boost young people’s power to take action individually and collectively, so that they can become actors of their own development and that of their communities. JADE benefits from the support of Agence française de développement and is being rolled out notably in 9 countries: Cambodia, Congo, Guinea, Haiti, Senegal, Madagascar, Mauritania, Myanmar and Vietnam.

LipoB, an association federating pre-collection operators (PCOs), will serve as an interface with municipal authorities. The Jagov 2 project teams intend to support LipoB to make its governance youth- and gender sensitive, and to conduct eco-citizen actions in districts.
