Bangui, the capital of the Central African Republic, is affected by the same urban issues of cleanliness and waste management as other cities. The Municipality of Bangui made efforts to structure and plan the sector, but it has yet to be stabilised, due in particular to a deficit of public finances. In this context, mapping of existing dynamics provides a fundamental lever to support private initiatives and support small operators working in waste management and re-use.
The “Fonds Équipe France Rapide” (FEF-R) scheme run by the French Embassy in the Central African Republic is being mobilised for this intervention to improve a healthy urban environment that is climate resilient.
This scheme, coordinated by GRET, has a dual objective: provide technical and financial support to several local operators for concrete actions in the short term, and encourage dialogue between the various stakeholders (financial partners, civil society organisations, humanitarian operators, the private sector, etc.) in order to co-define the bases of a structural intervention programme.
Thanks to their experience in similar contexts, GRET’s teams provide insights based on experience to appropriately address local issues.
Although implementing a public waste management service in Bangui is still a major challenge, this intervention is mobilising stakeholders on the circular economy, and thereby opening the way to sustainable solutions.
