The SePTA project is a continuation of the actions GRET has been conducting since 2012 to develop sanitation in the rural commune of Ampitatafika. This project aims to improve existing services such as sludge emptying and treatment, as well as access to hygienic toilets, with a focus on re-use of sludge treatment by-products. GRET and the Diotontolo association have been conducting this three-year project together since October 2023.
A value chain re-using sanitation by-products is implemented, prioritising co-composting of digestates with compost from organic household waste. This initiative, based on previous analyses confirming it is not harmful to health, includes the creation of a dedicated platform that is equipped and controlled for the composting process. This platform is supported by a marketing strategy aimed at promoting the co-compost produced.
Partnerships with agricultural actors and other users will be established to ensure stable demand. By maximising re-use of sanitation treatment by-products, the SePTA project is contributing to sustainable environmental and economic development of the municipality.
