MRLG
Promoting fairer land tenure policies in South-East Asia
Field Project, Research, Network animation

The Mekong regional land governance project (MRLG) aims to support the emergence of inclusive and sustainable land tenure policies securing access to land for family farms in four Mekong countries (Myanmar, Cambodia, Laos and Vietnam). Funded and managed by the Swiss (SDC) and German (BMZ) development cooperation agencies, it is being implemented in a partnership made up of Land Equity International (LEI) and GRET.

Following on from the principles defined by the Voluntary guidelines on the responsible governance of tenure of land, this 8-year project draws on flexible funding to strengthen the initiatives and capacities of a range of stakeholders working to change land tenure policies (State, local administration, civil societies, etc.) at regional and national level.

The project is working towards this goal to create a support platform to:

  • produce and disseminate knowledge and information enabling better understanding of issues and challenges around land tenure policies in the future,
  • strengthen stakeholders’ capacity to participate in the development and implementation of these policies,
  • promote discussion and sharing of experiences between stakeholders at national and regional level,
  • implement innovative projects,
  • develop informed advocacy supporting protection and securing of land rights for family farms.

GRET’s action

GRET coordinates all of the project’s actions in partnership with Land Equity International. In particular, it is in charge of capitalisation and experience-sharing activities. As part of this, GRET coordinated the initial regional project study (analysis of the political economy of land), supported production of stakeholder mapping, and developed a strategy for experience-sharing and learning in each of the countries and at regional level.

GRET also hosts the project in its 4 representative offices in Myanmar, Cambodia, Laos and Vietnam.
