In 2020, almost 60 % of the Haitian population were living in poverty, with two thirds of poor people living in rural areas. Almost 4.9 million Haitian people are currently suffering from food insecurity. This situation is exacerbated by the security context, particularly in Artibonite, where road blockages make transport difficult for people and goods, leading to impoverishment of the population and recurrent shortages of essential products. The agriculture and fishing sectors employ half of the labour force, but low yields – due to poor access to technologies and essential production resources, notably water for irrigation – prevent people from having a satisfactory level of income. Essential services (water, sanitation, education and healthcare) are not in line with the population’s needs.
Food and nutrition security is a crucial issue. The objective is to maintain a balance between food supply and demand, thereby ensuring continuous access to good quality, nutritious food for all. GRET’s teams work to improve responses to food insecurity by combining actions between several key sectors (agriculture, healthcare and social promotion), with the support of local partners AOG for goat and poultry production, and agroforestry, and Fonkoze for the social promotion component.
The project is being implemented in close collaboration with public sectoral institutions (Regional directorates) and local authorities concerned by food and nutrition security in the region. It is part of the Haitian State’s multi-sectoral food and nutrition security programme funded by the European Union, which delegated grant management to Expertise France.
