AFODEK
Agroforests for the development of Kipushi in DRC

The AFODEK project is contributing to better food security and income for populations in southern DRC’s Haut-Katanga province, while at the same time minimising deforestation due to charcoal production. An agroforestry scheme has been planned for the sustainable, productive, and profitable valorisation of 2,000 hectares of degraded wooded savannah in the Kipushi territory. The objective of the scheme is the settlement of 150 farming families in individual 12-hectare plots. Simultaneously, the 2,000 hectares of degraded wooded savannah are turned into agroforests, with farming and forestry production systems that are intensified, diversified and sustainable, and a system to monitor the carbon sequestered for its future valorisation.

GRET is providing technical assistance to support the installation of 150 farm managers, disseminating agroforestry techniques to other farmers and to technicians at AGRIPEL and the Ministry of the Environment, and enabling the Centre for the Promotion of Farming to take over the agroforestry scheme’s activities.
