As part of the decentralised cooperation agreements linking Paris to the city of Brazzaville, GRET was selected in November 2019 to conduct a Feasibility study for the creation of a waste sorting and recycling centre at the Brazzaville test garden.
This site measuring approximately seven hectares and located in the heart of Brazzaville, has an undeniable potential to house a unit for recycling organic waste, particularly with its proximity to markets – facilitating waste supply, the presence of numerous market gardens on the site, and possible collaboration with the nearby Marien Ngouabi University.
The study will consist of conducting a diagnosis of the area (socio-economic, agricultural, landscaping and waste management), and subsequently proposing options for its development to the municipality of Brazzaville, before designing a comprehensive development project. The tender documents drawn up will make it possible to select an operator for the developments required and management of the site. Possible avenues for recycling envisaged focus on the production of compost, soil and fuel briquettes.
Focus will also be placed on blending the site into its environment, use of local materials for construction, consideration of current uses of the site, rainwater and the development of the riverbed. To do this, the Strasbourg-based Alfred Peter architecture & urban planning firm will support GRET with this study.
The city of Brazzaville produces over 684,000 tons of household waste annually, 32 % of which is putrescible waste, representing a source of 219,000 tons of organic waste. Currently, very few experiences of recycling organic matter exist in the city. This project aims to become a real laboratory for recycling waste in Brazzaville, and more broadly in central Africa.
