The Delta CSO project finished at the end of August 2019. This project, which lasted two and a half years, was implemented in eight townships in the Delta region in Myanmar. Its main objective was to strengthen civil society by awarding grants. Thanks to financial support from Lift, it also aimed to support rural development in the region.
This project focused on three key principles:
- construction of a funding mechanism for civil society organisations;
- creation of inclusive governance of this fund, drawing on existing legitimate civil society stakeholders;
- support for social mobilisation and strengthening of civil society organisations’ capacities to develop actions and provide services to their members.
Delta CSO made it possible to construct and support a network of approximately one hundred civil society organisations with their organisational, technical and institutional dimensions, and to support their collective initiatives in the region – in particular vis-a-vis public authorities and private sector stakeholders.
It also undertook funding and implementation of 70 rural development microprojects (for a total of 1.2 million dollars). A committee for allocation and management of the fund – made up of people involved in the Delta region, and members of civil society organisations and of GRET – was set up to take charge of monitoring projects.
Today, shortly after the end of the project, sustainability challenges remain. GRET facilitated meetings with other national and international organisations with a view to supporting the network and the support fund over the long term.
Capitalisation work will be completed soon. It will be published by GRET between now and the end of the year.
