For the past 30 years, Gret has been active in Mauritania across several sectors: agriculture, natural resource management, health and nutrition, drinking water, sanitation and waste management, as well as social and professional integration. Our participatory approach ensures tailored, sustainable solutions. We co-construct our interventions with public institutions, civil society, the private sector and research stakeholders. Our innovative actions are designed to be long-lasting, to empower local actors, and to ensure the autonomous functioning of the structures we help set up.
“Gret is a multidisciplinary actor that has contributed continuously and professionally to local development in several regions of Mauritania for the past 30 years. The participatory approach — both in the design and implementation of projects and programmes — remains a cornerstone of the sustainability of our actions. The development of strategic partnerships with public, private, civil society and research stakeholders brings significant added value to our work.”
Mamadou ISMA KANE, Gret Representative in Mauritania
Since 1991, Gret has achieved the following:
Improving municipal project ownership and access to essential services
Gret supports rural and semi-urban municipalities in developing sectoral plans that complement their broader municipal development plans.
Over 12 local plans for water supply, sanitation and waste management have been produced. Needs are identified and prioritised by municipal councils, and costed solutions are proposed. Several projects and programmes have been implemented to improve communities’ access to infrastructure and sustainable management systems: more than 50 drinking water facilities, dozens of public latrines, over 100 multifunctional solar platforms, and more.
Improving maternal and child health
Since 2011, Gret has worked to improve the nutritional status of vulnerable young children in the Brakna and Gorgol regions through the Nutririm, Rimanje and Amal projects. These initiatives have directly reached over 60,000 beneficiaries.
The establishment of two infant flour production units in Kaédi and Bababé has helped improve access to quality complementary food. In addition, the Rimsanté project is strengthening the capacity of 14 health facilities and 10 basic health units.
Supporting agro-pastoral dynamics
Since 2023, with support from the G5 Sahel Facility, Gret has been implementing the Khaima project to foster an inclusive and sustainable economic and social environment. The project promotes agro-pastoral advisory services and professional integration to strengthen social cohesion and prevent conflict in the Moughataas of Timbedra and Djigueni. Expected outcomes include: 49 infrastructures built, 400 young people and women trained and employed, and improved social cohesion.
Several initiatives were also carried out between 2011 and 2024 in the Guidimakha, Gorgol and Assaba regions, particularly in support of agricultural value chains.
