Webinar – Develop participatory approaches to promote food diversity at household level

GRET is pleased to invite you to its first webinar about the strengthening of links between agriculture and nutrition in West Africa. Other meetings will follow in 2021, based in particular on the lessons learned from the Asanao programme. The next dates will be communicated to you shortly.

Actions focused on nutrition often develop rather prescriptive approaches to good dietary practices, both within the household and for specific targets (young children, pregnant and breastfeeding women). Nutrition-sensitive agricultural development actions, on the other ways, often adopt more participatory approaches, aiming to raise awareness among the various members of family farms, and to advise them from a technical point of view, but also in their strategic orientations. In what way can the combination of these types of approaches help to improve family food behaviors, and in particular to move towards greater food diversity in the meals of all family members?

Several questions will be raised during this webinar:

  • How can we successfully train agricultural advisors in nutritional issues? What synergies should be developed with nutrition stakeholders?
  • What entry points can be mobilized at the level of families, women, groups to support family farms through a comprehensive advice, which integrates both production and nutritional issues?
  • What are the obstacles currently encountered, particularly those related to gender? How can the actions carried out help to overcome them?

To answer these questions, several experiences will be shared during this meeting, moderated by Amel Benkahla, GRET’s project manager:

  • Claire Costis, Nutrition Project Manager at GRET, will present the reflections on the integration of agricultural and nutritional issues within GRET, as well as the contributions of the Asanao program agreement, deployed since 2018 thanks to funding from the French Development Agency.
  • Claire Kieffer, Head of Knowledge Management at the NGO Agrisud, will highlight the LANN approach developed by Agrisud on nutrition, focusing on awareness raising and support for behavior change ;
  • Sidi Mouhamed Hmeida, GRET’s Project Manager in Mauritania, will return – based on the actions carried out through the RIMRAP project – on the fundamental aspects of training, approaches, and postures of technical facilitators in the context of agricultural consulting;
  • Laurent Levard, program manager at GRET, will emphasize the importance of integrating nutritional issues into a family farm advisory approach (MAFF), based on an experience conducted in Haiti (Capagrinut project).
